In March 2011 a contract was concluded between Anglo American – Kumba Iron Ore – Sishen mine and Aerocare relating to the project management of the Batho Pele Mobile Health Unit Project, which is a joint venture between Kumba Iron Ore – Sishen mine and the Northern Cape Department of Health. The Mobile Units started delivering services in September 2011 and will be funded for 5 years, after which the project will be handed over to the Northern Cape Department of Health.
This project is the first of its kind in terms of the way it operates. There are 9 mobile units that are moved to 4 predetermined service points where they all remain for one week at a time. The 9 mobile units consist of a GP unit, Clinic, HIV counselling and testing unit, Dental Unit, Optometric Unit, Kitchen Unit, Accommodation Unit, Theatre Unit and Ablution Unit. In only one year the project managed to assist over 20 000 people.
